"Pour remplir la tâche que je me suis imposée, il ne suffisait pas de narrer ce que Babeuf et ses amis firent ou voulurent faire, afin de mettre leur plan à exécution, il fallait aussi expliquer le but final qu'ils se proposaient, et dire comment ils s'en démontraient la justice et la nécessité: j'ai donc dû faire marcher de front le récit des faits avec le développement de leurs doctrines et de leurs projects".

En dernier lieu, on ne dissimulera pas que, pour l'historien, l'interprétation de l'ouvrage n'exclut pas quelque incertitude. Buonarroti, il nous en prévient lui-même, ne disposait pas de toutes les sources originales: la plupart des papiers des Conjurés furent saisis chez Babeuf et, ensevelis dans les archives, ils échappaient en 1828 à la consultation; quelques uns seulement restaient aux mains de Buonarriti ou d'autres survivants; les souvenirs, il ne le nie pas, tiennent une grande place dans son information.
