THE DISPOSSESSED Le Guin, Ursula K.

Shevek is a brilliant physicist from the austerely isolationist and anarchic planet Anarres working on the Principle of Simultaneity which could revolutionize interstellar civilization by making instantaneous communication possible. But Shevek's life work is threatened by  jealous colleagues and so, in the face of intense hostility, he makes the unprecedented journey to the rich mother planet, Urras, hoping to find more tolerance there. But the aggressive capitalism of Urras suits him no better than the anarchism of Anarres and Shevek soon finds himself a helpless political pawn.

THE ECONOMY AND SOCIETY OF POMPEII - Jongman, Willem

This is the social and economic history of a small Roman town available. It combines inteligent detail with the theoretical insights of comparative history and modern economics. How large was Pompeii's population, how wealthy, what was the basis of its wealth, who ruled it, what tactics did the elite deploy to keep itself in power? These are the questions which Willem Jongman answers intelligently and inventively. For Roman social and economic historians, this book will be compulsive reading.

ANCIENT HISTORY: THE FIRST PUNIC WAR. J.F. Lazenby

The First Punic War (264-241 BC) was the longest continuous war in ancient history and arguably one of the most important. Fought between Carthage and Rome, it marks the point at which Rome ceased to be an essentially Italian power and became one of the great powers of the Mediterranean world. However, despite its importance this is the first major study in English to be devoted entirely to it. One reason for this apparent neglect of the war may be the comparative lack of evidence, but as the author demostrates, a closer look reveals rich and varied source material. Based on a detailed analysis of the ancient literary sources, but drawing on archaeological evidence where relevant, the author presents us with the fullest account we have of the greatest naval war ever fought.
Unashamedly a narrative history, The First Punic War is an important addition to our knowledge of the emergence of the Roman Empire and as a work of military hostory it will become the standard history of the war. In addition it provides a fascinating case-study in historical detective work which raises fundamental questions about the nature of such evidence. This much needed and engaging book will he widely welcomed by scholars and students of ancient history.

THE ARMOURER AND HIS CRAFT Grom the XIth to the XVIth century- Ffoulkes, Charles

Since its publication over 70 years ago, this classic reference work has been a standard in the field. It illuminates in masterly fashion every aspect of the armorer's craft during the approximately five centuries it flourished in Europe.
Valiant deeds performed by knights in armor have long been a staple of medieval life and lore; seldom, however, has a book offered such a meticulously detailed and thorough discussion of the armor itself- how it was made, what materials and tools were used, how it was decorated, cleaned and maintained, who were the great craftsmen, how much it weighed, how much it cost and much, much more.
Not only does the author describe many types of armor, he also analyzes and evaluates the products of individual armorers and entire periods from the standpoint of effectiveness, convenience, construction methods, decoration, and other aspects.
Enhancing the text are 69 line illustrations and 32 photographs depicting men in armor, suits of armor and objects related to the armorer's craft, along with two pages of reproductions of armorer's marks. Also includedare fascinating excerpts from actual medieval documents dealing with armor, and a comprehensive polyglot glossary of armor terms.

THE CITY IN HISTORY Mumford, Lewis

This book opens with a city that was, symbolically, a world: it closes with a world that has become, in many practical aspects, a city. In following through this development I have attempted to deal with the forms and functions of the city, and with the purposes that the city will have an even more significant part to play in the future than it has played in the past, if once the original disabilities that have accompanied it through history are sloughed off.

THE LONDON SCENE. Virginia Woolf

Virginia Woolf, one of the most admired writers of the twentieth century, is equally honored today for her fiction and for her essays, which covered a wide range of subjects. Born in 1882, she died in 1941.

These five sparkling essays on those aspects of London that have changed little since Virginia Woolf wrote of them in the 1930s show Woolf at the top of her from, blending together in her own unique fashion solid information and imaginative flights of fancy, fact and poetry.
"London", she wrote, "is a city in the full tide and race of human life." It still is. The Docks, Oxford Street, the great men's houses within its confines -Keats', Carlyle's- its abbeys and cathedrals, the House of Commons, today reflect those same enduring qualities that Virginia Woolf observed so perceptively.

GREEK ASTRONOMY Heath, Thomas L.

Astronomy as a science began with the Ionian philosophers, with whom Greek philosophy and mathematics also began. While the Egyptians and Babylonians had accomplished much of astronomical worth, it remained for the unrivalled speculative genius of the Greeks, in particular, their mathematical genius, to lay the foundations of the true science of astronomy. In this classic study, a noted scholar discusses in lucid detail the specific advances made by the Greeks, many of whose ideas anticipated the discoveries of modern astronomy.

ON THE PRINCIPLES AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE CALCULATOR Babbage, Charles

On the Principles and Development of the Calculator and Other Seminal Writings by Charles Babbage and Other.
Edited and with an Introduction By Philip Morrison and Emily Morrison
Crackpot to his contemporaries, genius to modern scientists, Charles Babbage (1792-1871) was the true discoverer of the principles on which all modern computing machines are based; but his time received his work with scorn, and his name has been virtually forgotten until recently. This original Dover publication is now the only complete story available of the life and work of this amazing mathematician-philosopher-inventor.
Part I consists of selections from Babbage's long-out-of-print autobiography, "Passages from the Life of a Philosopher." In his own unrestrained and "somewhat peculiar" way (Encyclopaedia Britannica), Babbage tells the lively story of his youthful escapades, his warm friendships (and embittered enmities) with such outstanding European figures as Laplace, Biot, Humbolt, and Sir Humphry Davy, and the dominating obsession of his life -the creation of a machine that would forever remove the mistakes and wasted effort inevitable in any extensive arithmetical calculations.
His dream has only now come true, but to convince yourself that Babbage was indeed far ahead of his time, turn to the articles by the inventor and by his contemporaries that explain the principles and operation of his brilliant -but never completed- calculating machines.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN CHEMISTRY Ihde, Aaron J.

Over the past two centuries chemistry has developed from germinal speculations on the nature of gases and minerals to a hoghly complex discipline encompassing munerous areas of study. This authoritative and comprehensive volume traces the historical development of chemistry from its roots in ancient Greek theory to the revolutionary and explosive discoveries of the 20th century. The author, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and History of Science at the University of Wisconsin, places the role of alchemy as a "precursor" to chemostry in perspective -he reveals that chemistry inherited just as much from medicine and technological arts. This book also shows how discoveries concerning gases in the mid-18th century were pivotal in creating the foundations of chemistry as a modern science.
